  • A Note from the Director

The Staff and Curriculum Development department at the Madison-Oneida BOCES is committed to providing continued interpretation, guidance, and support on initiatives from the New York State Education Department.  Over the past two years members of our department have been attending the Statewide Professional Development Network meetings for ELA, math, science, social studies and TLE (Teacher Lead Evaluator).  The purpose of these meetings is to provide us with firsthand information and a consistent professional development platform across New York State on new developments, most notably: the future implementation of the Next Generation ELA and Math Standards, the Social Studies Framework, the NYS Science Learning Standards, and APPR Teacher Lead Evaluator responsibilities, and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA),

Also during the 2016-17 school year, Staff and Curriculum Development Department had the opportunity to train over 120 teachers in Project-Based Learning (PBL).  During the summer of 2017, we also provided the region’s principals with a “PBL for Administrators” training so that they would have an awareness of the “Why” and “What” of PBL—a tutorial of the essential elements in the development of a PBL unit.  A new opportunity for educators during 2017-18 will be a Problem-Based Learning workshop designed specifically for math teachers.

Our region was also fortunate that a Professional Learning Community for those trained in PBL was established and implemented during the 2016-17 school year.   We anticipate providing the necessary support during 2017-18 for the expansion of the PBL Professional Learning Community as we train more educators to develop PBL units.    The PBL PLC will provide a wonderful opportunity for teachers to collaborate and share their experiences as they implement their PBL units.

We welcome your inquires for any information and assistance that our department may provide, and we appreciate your continued support of programs designed to address your interests and needs.  For further information on our offerings, or to request professional development services, please do not hesitate to contact us at scd@moboces.org or at 315-361-5550.  Don't forget to follow us on Twitter: @SCDatMOB
